Vintage Engagement Photos at Mean Jeen's in Chattanooga, Tennessee
I asked Rosie and Spencer how they found me while we were taking photos at Mean Jeen's.
They told me someone had recommended me on Reddit.
Later, I was having dinner with my cousin Sam at Pizza Bros when and mentioned that my couple found me on Reddit. It was then she told me she recommended me as a photographer to a couple looking for engagement photos in Chattanooga.
It was Rosie and Spencer.
The world feels smaller than it should sometimes.
Why They Chose Mean Jeen's
Rosie and Spencer picked Mean Jeen's because they loved the 70s aesthetic, and honestly, it suited them perfectly.
The wood paneling. The disco balls. The jukebox. The walls covered in collected things.
It's the kind of place where every corner already has a personality.
I love anything vintage, and I don't get many chances to photograph sessions like this. Most engagement sessions I shoot happen outdoors. Mountains, parks, trails, fields. All beautiful, but there's something refreshing about walking into a place that feels completely different.
Mean Jeen's felt like stepping into another decade.
Rosie and Spencer
Rosie wore a white mini dress with puffy sleeves. Spencer showed up in a brown suit and tie.
Neither outfit felt costume-y. They just looked like themselves.
That's probably my favorite thing about the entire session. Nothing felt forced. They weren't trying to recreate a Pinterest board or fit into whatever engagement photos are supposed to look like.
They found a place they loved, showed up dressed like themselves, and trusted me to run with it.
My Favorite Photos From the Session
The disco ball photos are probably the easiest to remember because I was fully lying on the floor to make them happen.
I wanted the disco ball hanging above them in the frame, so to the floor I went.
Worth it.
The photo booth images might be my actual favorites, though.
Rosie and Spencer were inside taking photos while I photographed them from outside the booth. They're some of the most genuine images from the entire session. Nobody was paying attention to me. They were just laughing and making memories together.
I also loved the photos by the jukebox.
At one point they started spinning around, and it felt less like an engagement session and more like I was witnessing a date.
Those are usually the moments I end up caring about most.
Film, Flash, and Good Window Light
I photographed this session on both digital and film.
The window light inside Mean Jeen's was beautiful, especially on a cloudy afternoon. Soft light has a way of making everything feel a little quieter.
Then there was the flash.
I kept bouncing back and forth between the two because the space worked so well for both. Some corners felt made for soft natural light. Others felt like they belonged in a flash photograph from thirty years ago.
Having both gave the gallery a nice balance.
Chattanooga Engagement Photos With Personality
What I love most about this session isn't the location or the outfits, although both were excellent.
It's that these photos couldn't belong to anyone else.
When Rosie and Spencer look back at them years from now, I hope they remember how much fun they had. I hope they remember the disco ball, the photo booth, the jukebox, and an afternoon spent together at one of their favorite places.
That's always the goal.
Not perfect photos.
Photos that feel like a time capsule.
